The numbers you need to know

60 - 80

UK veterans take their own life each year.

Most veterans know of at least one friend / colleague that has taken their own life.

70%

Average yearly increase in the numbers of veterans seeking help from military charities.

This figure will undoubtedly rise due to it taking an average of 7 - 15 years for a veteran to seek help.

2566

Episodes of support given to veterans by WWTW last year

£20

Donation helps a veteran to buy his young daughter a birthday present to stem suicidal thoughts for, in his words, ‘failing as a father’.

Why your help is so necessary

Every year, between 60 - 80 veterans take their own life, more than one each week.

For many, what they witnessed during their time in the forces will never leave them.

When they leave the forces, many find it difficult to re-integrate into civilian life.  Instead of helping them, Government agencies often make it hard for veterans. Instead of being at the front of the queue for help, veterans often have to fight bureaucracy to get even the most basic help, which they are entitled to.

Unfortunately, for some, this fight for help becomes too much. They lose the fight with their inner demons and they give up.

The Walks

This year, I'm walking 50 Kms around Wythenshawe between 10th - 20th December.

Most days, I'll set off from Benchill Community Centre, walk up Greenwood Rd to the MEA where I'll turn left. Passing the Police Station, I cut through the Forum and onto Civic Centre. I exit Civic near Etrop court & right towards the Fire Station. I then turn left towards Manchester College & onto Hollyhedge Rd. I make my way back to Benchill Community Centre. Total distance - 5Kms.

On Saturday the 14th, I have a longer walk!

Starting from home in Newall Green, I head to Civic Centre, past Etrop Court & the fire station. Down past Manchester College towards Sharston roundabout. Just before I reach the roundabout, I turn right  onto Altrincham Rd to Wythenshawe F.C. in time to photograph the match against Widness FC at 3pm. This walk is 4.5Kms! Why don't you join us for a cracking afternoon of local football?

What Walking With The Wounded do

Walking With The Wounded ‘WWTW’ deliver employment, mental health, care coordination and volunteering programmes in collaboration with the NHS to get those who served, and their families, whether mentally, socially or physically wounded, back on their feet and making a positive contribution once more.

Why?

Because those who served, deserve.
